SHAANTI PRESENTS NEW NIGHT CHAMPION SOUND |
|
|
|
| |
Champion Sound is the underground illegitimate child of Birmingham’s Shaanti’s showcase night happening every month at Concrete.
Shaanti presents Champion Sound is a heavier and more serious outlook to music with the night’s typically funky approach. The programme is split into three sections: Live Vs DJ Vs Art.
“The concept of Champion Sound is to sound-clash many musical forms and genres into one club sound. It’s about promoting new music on a underground level, It’s also a chance to showcase exclusive DJ sets from artists from the breaks, drum and bass, dub, liquid Jazz, Asian fusion… community together with an eclectic, intimate backdrop of raw undiluted live talent,” Manga, Founder of Shaanti says.
Champion Sound is all about the music first; it’s also a place where artists and new talent can network, showcase and jam with like-minded people who love music. In many ways it what Shaanti used to be like when it first launched back in 1999.
So if you like your beats eclectic, diverse and underground check out Champion Sound every month. For further information please

‘If one thing defines Birmingham club Shaanti it isn’t the sounds imported from the subcontinent but a rip up the rulebook approach that could only have come from the UK. Featuring grime, dub, hip-hop and drum’n’bass with an Asian twist and a punk attitude, this is the most exciting and vital cultural crossover since The Clash discovered reggae.

B'day
Quotes From the Scene: |
|
|
|
| |
Farook
from Joi, Real World Records says -“Congratulations
and Happy Birthday to Shaanti for running the longest Asian-Global
Fusion Break-Beat club in this country. My experiences
at Shaanti are always strong, because of the power of the
crown and the multiplicity of its beats. It's an honour
for me to be a guest for Shaanti’s birthday and I
can't wait to play an exclusive soundsystem set and drop
some tracks from my new album ‘Without Zero’ on
the night. Keep up the good work as the movement moves
on.”
UK Apache - “Shaanti influence on
the music of western society is hard to overstate, Shaanti’s
a legend all over the world.”
SUNJ from Asian Dub
Foundation - “The sheer energy of the people
and collective musical output of Shaanti always puts a
smile on my face. Respect to Shaanti and all that sail
in her!! Happy 8 Birthday to U.”
Bobby Friction, BBC
Radio 1 & BBC Asian Network - “Happy
8th Birthday Shaanti! I remember playing at the 1st
ever Shaanti night and thinking that if the club could
keep it going for a couple of weeks it may just become
a ‘good little club night’. I didn’t
realize 8 years later I would be talking about a unique
behemoth in the world of Asian clubbing that every DJ I
know wants to play at. As a performer it gives you
hundreds of the most open ears you can imagine, a sound
system that sounds like the industrial revolution in action,
and entry into the select band of DJ’s & bands
that have played there over the years. I don’t
think I’ve met a DJ or Artist who hasn’t enjoyed
playing there! Where else in the UK can you play
Bhangra, Hip Hop, Drum & Bass, House and Grime all
in the same set and get a legendary response? I cut
my teeth at that club and have a lot to thank it for.”
Russ Jones from Future
World Funk, Hackney and Globe Trotting - “Big
birthday hugs and kisses to the phatest Asian night on
the planet.”
Gaudi - “The
coolest Birmingham night turns 8, 8 as “the number
of the infinite”; Long life to the infinite Shaanti,
lets celebr8”!!!! Rezpekt.”
Sacha Brooks, Galaxy – “I

Funkshaan
Moves Residency to Prana |
|
|
|
| |
Funkshaan's monthly residency at Digress comes to an end
this year; however don't despair, as they're only moving
down the road to Prana, next door to the Mailbox.
With over three year's of glorious parties under their
belt at their previous home Digress in Birmingham, Funkshaan
has become one of the strongest brands in the clubbing
world causing a revolution on the Midland's dancefloor.
The huge success and monthly sell out nights, which started
in November 2003, has meant that a bigger and more glamorous
venue was needed. Funkshaan's dominance of the club scene
is self-evident - after all, it stands for Sounds of Desi
Dance. But thanks to the nearly constant presence of acts
like RDB, The Mentor Kollektiv, Sona Family and The Specialist
this year, the club is becoming a focus for the less traditional
but more of a funkier Asian club sound.
A spokesperson from Funkshaan says: "It's been clear for
some time that we'd started to outgrow Digress and even
though our memories will be happy ones, the move to Prana
is set to further establish our reputation as one of the
biggest players in the game."
Funkshaan's Opening Party at Prana takes place on July,
Friday 8 and the Second Saturday of every month thereafter.
Kicking it off is MTV Base's Hanif, who will be joined
by Manga from Galaxy/Shaanti and Groovemasters and many
more...! Click here for
further information.

Sutraaeton
Leaves Chi |
|
|
|
| |
Come April, Sutraaeton bids farewell to its
residency at Chi. Having dominated the venue for over 2
years, playing out the very best in cutting edge Asian,
Urban and Dance music and hosting the baddest parties known,
every 1st Friday of the month, they’ve decided to
pack-up and go in search of new ventures. A spokesperson
for Sutraaeton says:
“Chi was a satisfying venue that served its purpose
for many years, but alias all good things come to an end
and it’s now time to move on. It’s a shame,
but due to high volumes of calls and emails from our regulars
demanding a bigger dancefloor and a better soundsystem
come April 2006, Sutraaeton at Chi will be our last. We
wish Chi, its staff and its management every success in
its programming and we hope that it continues to do well
in the future | | |
